Restoration of NFTA-Metro Bus No. 12's French and Kehr Street Route
I am working concerning several East Side Buffalo Community-facing Initiatives, and including advocating for restoration of the No. 12 NFTA-Metro Bus Route that (formerly) traveled along French Street, in Buffalo.
Removal and Remediation of Route 33 Kensington Expressway
I am also a staunch proponent of Removal and Remediation of NY Route 33 Kensington Expressway, in our city, and I also demand and support the reparation and the reconnection of Humboldt Parkway Neighborhoods, and East Side Buffalo Neighborhoods, severed by the construction of the Kensington Expressway back during 1955-1971. In February (2024), the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Authority ok'd New York State Department of Transportation [NYSDOT] advancing NYSDOT's controversial and unfair NY 33 Kensington Expressway Project. That means an Environmental Impact Statement was not made a requirement, by the FHWA, in order for the project to be commenced. That, despite reality that Black and African American, and other, Residents are sick, and some have even died, due to the high Level of Pollution emanating from the freeway. Studies all over the world have documented that high-speed highways, like the NY Route 33 Kensington Expressway, make people sick. Why is the FHWA okaying the poisoning of Humboldt Parkway's (now) predominantly Black and African American Neighborhood Residents? Black and African American Youth Workforce Participation: Bills, Bills, Bills
Another proposal I am supporting, is the absolute need for Buffalo's Black and African American Community to be counted amongst the "minority" community persons that (supposedly) stand to benefit from the New Buffalo Bills Stadium Construction Project. Tolerating the U.S. Federal Governments $Billion new investments into this Buffalo-Niagara Region, without ensuring that the city's Black and African American Community benefit and gain, should be anathema to passage or provision of that which Big Developers clamor for access, concerning. Namely, $Millions and $Billions in public dollars, as funding.
To Recap: Our 2024 Agenda, Moving Forward
For the U.S. Federal Government's $Billion investment to be spent perpetuating the NY Route 33 Kensington Expressway, should be a "no-go". When direly detrimental changes impacting a Historically Marginalized, Underserved, Disenfranchised, and Disadvantaged Community of Persons are implemented, but without regard for how those households will integrate the disruption, is where I cry "wrong resolution". Furthermore, when the illness and death of Minority Residents is posed to "not matter", is when I cry "foul"! This (2024) year, we are prepared to experience the discontinuation of the Season of Environmental Justice that was unfolded throughout the world, when high-speed freeways, expressways, and highways were plowed through the 'heart' of (predominantly) Minority, or fast-becoming (predominantly) Minority, communities. If you are unsure what those changes are, in Buffalo, contact me here. Lastly, for an overview of my (additional) Advocacy and Activism pathways, please view the About Sherry Sherrill section, here. To (uniquely) empower the Buffalo's Black and African American Residents, and to aid in the uplift of our community, so that residents and their children might gain the access necessary to be able to enjoy a healthy, vibrant, and (highly) active partnership with we fellow-neighbors, and (especially) as I continue the pursuit of my academic studies. I'll be looking for opportunities to extend my community engagement, and during later years, to excel at my profession. I have admired the field of urban planning, all my life, thus far. Gaining an offer of admission from the University at Buffalo, has been nothing short of a (delayed) dream made true. Ultimately, I hope to help rebuild the Buffalo Niagara Region's Black community, and starting first, right 'here', inside Buffalo.
I love Buffalo, dearly, but I love my Black and African American Community more so. Why? I was brought here, to Buffalo, at Age 4, but I have been Black and African American all my life. I have traveled from Buffalo', to Brooklyn, and Borough of Manhattan, and all the way to Berlin, and back again. I was in Germany not very long after The Berlin Wall 'fell'. The Brandenburg Gate is epic, and thoroughly beautiful. it is very inspiring, to be sure, to behold something that impacted Napoleon. Yet, even in Berlin, during the 1990s, there was great civil unrest and social turmoil, 'there'. There was diabolical hatred, and hate-filled violence, inflicted against an ethnic minority Immigrant community, and as imposed by a White Racists Supremacist faction. I have seen, first-hand, what disempowerment can cause to become visited upon an unsuspecting community's individuals.
So, here's to the strengthening of "our" Community's (local, regional, national, and global) posit. Here's to improving our alliances, so that there is no disconnect between "we", and our supporters. Here's to our recovery, and to our sustainability, and to the preservation of our hard-won gains. Here's to better understanding our multifaceted, multidimensional, multi-storied history, and to the restoration of our time-honored culture, and of its venerable traditions. Thank you, immensely, to Greater Refuge Temple | Buffalo, for everything done, and throughout all these years, to help deliver solace, guidance, and aid to my household. Greater Refuge Temple has shown we the Love of Christ, in Jesus' Name. We are so very grateful.
